How are lab-grown diamonds made?

Modern technology enables the production of lab-grown diamonds by 2 methods:  High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT), and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). The HPHT method is a technique that perfectly replicates the environmental conditions for a diamond to grow in nature. The similarity is such that a lab-grown diamond is graded to the same specifications as mined diamonds, as well as accompanied by a Diamond Grading Report. 

CVD, on the other hand, places a small diamond seed in a tightly-controlled environment. The rough diamond then grows, atom-by-atom, recreating the natural process. Both CVD and HPHT produce diamonds that have the same brilliance, sparkle, fire, and scintillation found in a natural diamond; the only difference between the two is their origin.

Just as our earth mined diamonds are evaluated and accompanied by diamond grading reports by the leading gem labs, so are our lab grown diamonds.

The US Federal Trade Commission recognized lab-grown diamonds and changed the definition of a diamond by removing the word “natural” from the wording in 2018, making official that for the American Trade Commission, both natural and lab-grown diamonds are considered to be, “diamonds.”
